1. How do I download a Bit torrent file? (Most links on this site are bit torrents)
Download Bit torrent (http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html) and install or...
Download a Bit torrent client (http://a.scarywater.net/torrent/clients/) and install.
That is all you need to do. Click on the link and BT should automatically launch.
If you get a page full or un-recognizable characters, then save the file to your harddrive and double click on the .torrent file.

2a. I'm getting an "couldn't allocate dir - [Errno 22]" error, what do I do?
2b. How do I make windows recognize chinese text?

You couldn't allocate the directory because the files that you are downloading or the filename of the bit torrent has unicode characters that your operating system doesn't understand. Sometimes you can fix this by simply saving the torrent to your computer and renaming it. The long term fix is to add chinese language support to your Operating System.

I'm going to give one set of instructions that is for Windows XP, 2000 is similar so you should be able to figure it out.

1. go to control panel
2. go to "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options"
3. Open "Regional Options"
4. Go to the "Advanced" tab
5. From the drop down, choose "Chinese (Hong Kong SARS)

3. hmmm...I don't see that option there?

That means that you haven't copied those language files from your Windows XP cd yet.

1. From the same dialog window, go to the "Languages" tab
2. make sure you check "Install files for East Asian Languages" <- may need a restart
3. The option should now appear on your list.

4. After I've set the language to Chinese (Hong Kong SAR), some of my system dialogs are in chinese..what do I do?

I haven't figured out how to fix this yet, but if you plan ahead..this is avoidable. The next time you install your operating system, make sure you take the time to install the support for East Asian Languages and check off Chinese (Hong Kong SARS) as one of the supported ones, and have your main Operating System Language set to English. This is working for me. I don't have problems with BT files while my language is still set to english. Yes, this means you can't click "next, next, next" to install Windows.

5. What is the best BT client to use?

Totally a matter of preference, they all pretty much work. It is highly recommended that you download a client instead of just using BT as it comes.

I use Azureus (http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/) and feel that its the best one out there. Its a java-based client.
The Shadows Experimental Client (http://bt.degreez.net/) is probably the most popular
ABC (http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/) is gaining a lot of users as well and it has a good number of functions.
Those are the main ones..although there are a lot more.

6. Is it possible to burn rm or rmvb files onto a VCD?

Yes and no. The answer is actually "No", you can't burn rm or rmvb to a VCD format, but you can encode the rm or rmvb to an mpeg and then burn it to a VCD.

I've never done it and have no expertise in this so..some other mod might want to jump in here. I've heard or read that you need EOVideo to encode your real files to MPEG which can then be burn to VCD like any other MPEG.

7. There are a lot of weird file that I get from bit torrents, what do I do with them?

.zip files - winzip (http://www.winzip.com/downwzeval.htm)
.rar files - winrar (http://www.rarlabs.com/download.htm)
.rmvb or .rm - real player (http://www.real.com/) or Windows Media Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/)
.avi - Divx Player (http://www.divx.com) or WMC

8a. How do I use *.iso, *.cue, *.nrg, *.bwt, *.cdi, *.ccd, *.mdf/*.mds, *.bin etc. files?

These files are CD/DVD images of another CD/DVD (like a picture from the original). When used in Nero or Alcohol 120%, you can burn yourself a copy of what the original CD/DVD was. If you want to check out what is in the image itself, you need a virtual drive (i.e. Dameon Tools).

8b. How do I use those files without burning it to CD, VCD or DVD?

You'll have to read them via a virtual drive. I've only used virtual drives from alcohol so I will use that as an example.

1. From alcohol, choose to open the image file. (You can just drag the image file into alcohol.
2. The file will appear on the list of images. Right click on it, and choose to mount it to the virtual drive that was created when you first installed alcohol. (Alcohol created a CD drive on "my computer" for you upon install.)
3. After the file was mounted, now just go to that CD drive and treat it like a regular DVD or VCD.

ISO Buster (http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/)

9. I'm hearing two languages from my movie, what do I do?
Depending on the player that you are using, there is basically two possible answers.

1. Change your system sound settings to all right or all left channel. This means that you can go to your volume controls in the control panel and just pull the balance equalizer all the way to the left or to the right. (Sometimes changing the balance on your speakers will work as well.)

2. Choose a language from the media player. There is usually a option for you to change languages if a file contains multiple tracks. In windows media player you can go to:: Play > Audio and Language Track > {Choose your option here}. On many other players, you might be able to just right-click > Audio > {Choose your option here}

10. Is there specific ports I can set to make BT download faster if i'm behind a router or firewall?

Yes, ports 6881-6999 are the most common ports used in BT clients. If these ports are opened, you will get the most efficient downloading speeds.

11. How can I watch the cd image files without actually burning it to CD?

I use two programs.

1. alcohol 120: Open the image file in your virtual drive. Alcohol 120 makes a virtual drive on your pc when it installs. You'll see the image file as if the VCD/DVD is in the drive itself. Open file with alcohol 120, right click on the image and set it to the virtual drive.

2. ISOBuster: extract the mpeg out from the CD image. When you drag the CD image file into ISOBuster, you'll see the file hierarchy of the DVD/VCD. Go to the directory with the mpeg/dat file you want to watch and extract it.

12. I get a page full of weird characters when I click on the BT link, what do I do?

This is because your browser has opened the BT file and the data of the BT file is not readable. For these links, right-click the link and save link to your local pc. Then double click on the BT file.

--ehh..ok I'm tired...I'll continue to compile the list later. Mod's..please add what you want.
